Further Down the Road – Lyrics

Further Down the Road

1. Fire in the Stone

I left the city long ago now I live next to a dusty road

From Lightning Ridge to Grawin opal fields

Where no one needs to know my name and I spend my days working my claim,

And all the locals ‘round here know the deal.

Through the heat and the dust and the flies

Working that old opal mine

An old caravan serves as my home and I prefer to work alone

I know I’m really close to a big find

And when I finally strike it here  I’ll tell no one, just disappear

I’ll hit the road and leave it all behind.

Through the heat and the dust and the flies

Working that old opal mine.

And I work my claim on my own.

Chasing that fire in the stone.

Through the heat and the dust and the flies

Working that old opal mine.

And I work my claim on my own.

Chasing that fire in the stone.

2. Minnamurra

On the banks of the Minnamurra, white men came.

On the banks of the Minnamurra, people slain.

On the banks of the Minnamurra, guns rang out

On the banks of the Minnamurra, no one left about

Peaceful camp on Wadi Wadi land

Campfire smoke, rising from the sand

They came with horses and with guns

Lined them up, beneath the bloodwood gums

On the banks of the Minnamurra, white men came.

On the banks of the Minnamurra, people slain.

On the banks of the Minnamurra, guns rang out

On the banks of the Minnamurra, no one left about

Gun smoke hanging on the breeze

Cockatoos scatter through the trees

Even the though the Governor appealed

None were charged for this killing field

On the banks of the Minnamurra, white men came.

On the banks of the Minnamurra, people slain.

On the banks of the Minnamurra, guns rang out

On the banks of the Minnamurra, no one left about

3. Eureka

I worked for the Eureka Mine,

Breaking stone for the South Coast line

Breaking rock I earned my pay/I’d give it all back if I could change that day

Working on top with a charge to blow/crew in the quarry working down below.

All at once my world turned black/landed in the rubble flat on my back

Broken bodies, broken bones/ everyone covered in dust and stone.

I worked for the Eureka Mine,

Breaking stone for the South Coast line [x 2]

Five men killed and six men maimed/another died later in a world of pain

Sound of the blast heard ‘round the town/wives and families started gathering ‘round

I cannot forget that sight/scrambling through the rubble for signs of life

I can’t forget those cries and moans/ for the sons and fathers not coming home.

I worked for the Eureka Mine,

Breaking stone for the South Coast line [x 2]

Was it me? What have I done? / I cry for your father and for your son

If only I could turn back time/ I would gladly trade their lives for mine.

I won’t go back to that Eureka Mine

I’m gonna lay me down on the South Coast line.

I worked for the Eureka mine.

4. Ocean

Come with me, won’t you take my hand

And we’ll go down to the sea

Leave our footprints in the sand

Feel that water cooling our feet

Let’s swim out beyond the break

Where the water’s blue and green

Feel the power of the waves as we make

Our way through the water floating and free

Oh Ocean roll

Free my soul

In your waters deep

I feel home in your salt and foam

When I feel your water wash over me

We can lie down in the sun

Feel the salt dry on our skin

Close our eyes, hear the ocean’s hum

And the sound of the waves calling us in.

Oh Ocean roll

Free my soul

In your waters deep

I feel home in your salt and foam

When I feel your water wash over me

Oh……Oh ..Oh

Oh…..Oh...oh…Oh

Come with me, won’t you take my hand

And we’ll go down to the sea

Leave our footprints in the sand

Feel that water cooling our feet

Oh Ocean roll

Free my soul

In your waters deep

I feel home in your salt and foam

When I feel your water wash over me

5. Jamberoo Mountain Blues

My home is on a mountain by a pretty little creek

I have to leave home early, six days a week.

When I head down the mountain, it happens every time

I get that lonesome feeling a little further down the line

I get those Jamberoo Mountain, Jamberoo Mountain blues

When I leave home I get those Jamberoo Mountain blues

My wife she up and left me, sick of my bad moods

So I’m living on this mountain with nothing left to lose

Except those… Jamberoo Mountain, Jamberoo Mountain blues

When I leave home I get those Jamberoo Mountain blues

One day I will stop working, spend my time at home

Happy on that mountain and I’ll ditch the mobile phone

And lose those… Jamberoo Mountain, Jamberoo Mountain blues

When I leave home I get those Jamberoo Mountain blues

6. Stand on Your Own Two Feet

When I was young, just seventeen, my father told me son

I’m not so sure you know the way to get those big deals done

I told him that was not my scene, I didn’t need no go between

That I would stand on my own two feet.

When I was working in my job, my boss complained to me.

She said ask Joe, he’s over there, he knows how it should be

I told her that was not my scene, I didn’t need no go between

That I would stand on my own two feet.

And if that road ahead keeps shifting stand on your own two feet

And if your world just keeps on drifting, stand on your own two feet

If you’re not sure which way to go

Don’t turn around and head back home

You’ve gotta stand on your own two feet.

So if you’re feeling down and out, don’t hang your head in shame

Don’t listen when they tell you that, you’re the one to blame

Just tell them that, it’s not your scene, that you don’t need no go between

That you will stand on your own two feet.

And if that road ahead keeps shifting stand on your own two feet

And if your world just keeps on drifting, stand on your own two feet

If you’re not sure which way to go

Don’t turn around and head back home

You’ve gotta stand on your own, stand on your own

Stand on your own two feet.

7. Woodhill Mountain

The shadows are falling and I have been counting

The black cockatoos as they let go their cry

The last rays of sun dip behind Woodhill Mountain

As the sunset colours the sky.

I can see that old river flowing out to the ocean

Through the valleys and green fields making its way

As the light turns to dark, I turn to you hoping

You’ll stay ‘til the sun greets the day.

Now the stars are all out and the moonlight is calling

Come see the beauty above

I know that I, must leave in the morning

But tonight, I am with you my love.

Time won’t stand still and the minutes I’m counting

‘Til I have to go on my way

But tonight I’m with you, upon Woodhill Mountain

Wishing that here I could stay.

Now the stars are all out and the moonlight is calling

Come see the beauty above

I know that I, must leave in the morning

But tonight, I am with you my love.

8. Water from the Well

Don’t drink the water from the well

Don’t drink the water from the well

The water it’s no good anymore

Don’t drink the water from the well

The fish are dying in the stream

The fish are dying in the stream

The water it’s no good anymore

The fish are dying in the stream

Mother crying in the field

In her hand a meagre yield

To this land she’s given birth

Beneath her feet, the dying earth.

They say the ocean is rising up

They say the ocean is rising up

Soon there’ll be no land any more

They say the ocean is rising up.

Don’t drink the water from the well

Don’t drink the water from the well

The water it’s no good anymore

Don’t drink the water from the well

9. Sing Like a Bird

If I could sing just like a bird

I’d sing a song of joy to you.

I’d make sure my song was heard.

If I could sing, I’d sing for…

   You hooo, yoo hooo hooo

If I could sing just like a bird

I’d sing a song of joy to you.

I’d make sure my song was heard.

If I could sing, I’d sing for…

   You hooo, yoo hooo hooo

If I could run the fastest race

I’d run right to your door

I’d run so fast up to your place

If I could run, I’d run to ….

You hooo, yoo hooo hooo

If I could paint a picture fair.

I’d paint this one for you.

Your portrait is beyond compare.

If I could paint, I’d paint for you.

   You hooo, yoo hooo hooo

If I could sing just like a bird

I’d sing a song of joy to you.

I’d make sure my song was heard.

If I could sing, I’d sing for…

   You hooo, yoo hooo hooo

10. Where the River Flows

Feeling like, life’s leaving me behind

I’ve gotta go and ease my mind.

So I’m heading down that road

To where the river flows

Hear the water skipping over stones

It’s quiet and I’m alone

Feels like I’ve come home

To where the river flows

Where the river flows, water deep and cold.

Where the trees are whispering of the stories told.

I can lose myself and cleanse my soul whee the river flows

Where that river flows.

So if you’re feeling like life’s leaving you behind.

You’d better go and ease your mind

Yeah just keep heading down that road

To where the river flows

Where the river flows, water deep and cold.

Where the trees are whispering of the stories told.

I can lose myself and cleanse my soul whee the river flows

Where that river flows.

11. The End of the Year

They pushed the boat out on the lake

They could see his house from there

And they watched the cruel flames take

As the ash rained down upon them, black smoke filled the air.

They went down to the sand

Where they used to play

And they held each other’s hand

But nobody was playing/ on the beach that day

And while the world sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’

They waited on the beaches, queued up in the lines.

Smelt the smoke and felt the fear

What a way to end, the end of the year.

Yellow figures in the fire

Faces grimy black

There was no time to be tired

Hoping they’d still have a home when they finally got back.

And while the world sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’

They waited on the beaches, queued up in the lines.

Smelt the smoke and felt the fear

What a way to end, the end of the year.

My Country/Oh my Country/ My Country/ I cry for you.

Many years the trees stood there

Forest giants home to life

Now they’re blackened, branches bare.

No animals or birdsong in the eerie yellow light.

12. Further Down the Road

May the sun shine upon you, warm you through the day.

Let there be light in the darkness to guide you on your way.

May your journey be gentle, light be your load.

I know that I will see you further down the road. Further down the road.

My darling child, you’re leaving hurts me so.

But you must make your own way.

Into this world you go.

May the sun shine upon you, warm you through the day.

Let there be light in the darkness to guide you on your way.

May your journey be gentle, light be your load.

I know that I will see you further down the road. Further down the road.

Hello old friend. It’s been a while.

I know we’ve had some good times.

You always make me smile.

May the sun shine upon you, warm you through the day.

Let there be light in the darkness to guide you on your way.

May your journey be gentle, light be your load.

I know that I will see you further down the road. Further down the road.

I’m moving on. It’s time to go.

But I know that I will see you

Further down the road.

May the sun shine upon you, warm you through the day.

Let there be light in the darkness to guide you on your way.

May your journey be gentle, light be your load.

I know that I will see you further down the road. Further down the road.
